This Stunning Seattle Home Puts Glam Firmly Back on the Design Map

Classic and modern elements define this striking Seattle home designed by Michelle Dirkse, owner and principal designer of Michelle Dirkse Interior Design. Coming in at 2000 square feet, the one-and-a-half-story home with a partially finished basement offered a large canvas for Dirkse to work with, and she made every inch count.

The design process began with aВ major renovation of the house, which was originally built back in 1942. Dirkse and her team refinished the oak floors, added newВ lighting throughout the space, and repainted all of the interiors. They also modified a few doorways to create a more symmetrical layout and added a trim for the classic wainscoting on the walls. All in all, it was a major overhaul that proved to be well worth the effort.

"My goal was to honor the home's history and architecture while also reflecting the client's personality and lifestyle," Dirkse tells MyDomaine. The completed project comes across and glamorous and modern, meeting the designer's expectations. In the living room, a colorful painting hangs above the luxe velvet sofa.В The piece by Seattle artistВ Corrie LaVelle takes center stage in the elegant space.

Along with the abstract artwork, the living room is filled with modern furnishings and dГ©cor. Accent chairs define the layout of the space while a large area rug and throw pillows add layers and warmth.

"I love the mix of classic and modern elements throughout the home," Dirkse says. Note the chic objects that fill the bookcase in the living room just beyond a traditional black-and-gold accent chair. It manages at once to be both eclectic and refined.

Throughout the home, a color scheme of black and white with navy and metallic accents emerges.В "The clientsВ were drawn to high-contrast rooms with black and white, but they also had a few images with navy. We focused on these colors, mixed metals, and brought in a few blush and burgundy accents," the designer explains.

Perhaps the most striking element of the house, an antique mirror sits above a black marble fireplace between two modern sconces on the wall andВ seemingly timeworn statues on the ground. It's one of Dirkse's favorite finds for the house. "We love incorporating vintage and antique pieces into projects," she says.

In the kitchen, the aesthetic is a bit more contemporary. According to Dirkse, she and her team found affordable kitchen tile backsplashВ that allowed her clients more budget to spend on modern appliances, but you wouldn't even know this affordable backsplash from a more expensiveВ selection.

Although the kitchen isn't the most spacious, Dirkse managed to get the most out of the room. She removed portions of the kitchen cabinetry to open up the layout and change the flow of the space.

In addition to removing cabinets in the kitchen to create more space,В Dirkse also crafted a window seat where outdated wood paneling and shallow shelves used to beВ behind the kitchen table. It's a lovely feature of the finished nook.

The formal dining room is much more sophisticated and elegant than the casual kitchen.В Dirkse used Cole & Son wallpaper to add an element of drama above the trim that aligns with her client's desired color scheme, while a bold chandelier, strong rectangular table, and invisible chairs tie the space together.

As with the rest of the house, the bedroom maintains the mix of modern and classic design styles, including a gray headboard with metallic accents and a powder blueВ coverlet from Parachute.

"Our favorite projects are always those that allow us to help with both the remodel and with the furniture," Dirkse says. With her design expertise, this Seattle home was completely reimagined into a sophisticated and glamorous home worthy of displaying major dГ©cor inspiration.
